3 Steps to Your Best Year Ever

Right around this time every single year I look at my calendar and realize there's only a few more days until the New Year rolls in.

I usually feel perplexingly proactive and hesitant, resulting in a bout of procrastination. "I haven't even reflected on 2017, how am I supposed to set a good foundation for 2018?"

Fear not, because these three New Year's exercises can be done in as little as 10 minutes and will set you up for greatness in 2018. Ready for your best year yet? Because you definitely deserve it.

1. Theme your year.

As in pick one word that will be the theme of the year. My last three years have been themed exploration, balance, and openmindedness. Every time I set them before the new year starts, that intention seeps into every facet of my life. My question every day becomes, "How can I add more X into this day/situation/moment?" Whatever goals you have, your theme should be what you always link it back to.

2. Find your happy spots of 2017.

Hone in on what five things made you most happy this year and reflect on why they made you happy. Then find a way to make room for something similar in 2018. If it's vacation, block out that time now. If it's a ritual you started, make room for it in your calendar. Notice that I said five things that made you feel the happiest, not feel most proud or accomplished. Really dive deep into the things that lit your face up with joy and made your eyes glisten, like a kid on Christmas Day.

3. Tunnel vision your focus for 2018.

If you are on top of it and have already done your resolution, I hope it does not involve list after list after list. We have all heard that multitasking is the death of productivity. Same goes for superfluous goal setting. Out of all the things you want to change in 2018, I recommend limiting it to 7-10 things and dividing the goals you focus on into quarters. For example:

  • January-March: Goals 1, 2, 3

  • April-June: Goals 4,5

  • July-September: 6, 7, 8

  • October-December: 9, 10

This will give you a very clear layout not just for New Year's resolution season, but for the entire year. So start slow, habits take a long time to build. And with this system, every three month mark is a fresh start and feels like another New Year!
